3 Reasons Why Your Torque Wrench Needs to Be Calibrated

If you’ve been reading our blog lately, you’ll have noticed we’ve been talking quite a bit about the RAD gun from RAD tool.

These are among the best tools on the market, but like any high-end tool, a RAD gun will only function with proper care and maintenance.

Part of that maintenance includes regular torque wrench calibration. In this blog post, we’ll look at the benefits of having torque guns calibrated and why you should choose a calibration lab that’s achieved ISO 17025 accreditation.

Why Your Torque Wrench Needs to Be Calibrated:

  1. Safety

Torque tools like the RAD gun are often used in environments where there is little room for error, such as mining and quarry operations, oil pipelines and wind turbines.

Mistakes in this type of industry can put people at risk, which is why it’s important to make sure your tools are tightening bolts to the exact specification.

  1. Accuracy

With proper torque wrench calibration, you can be sure you’ve achieved the appropriate torque every time you fasten a bolt, helping you avoid errors and prevent downtime.

  1. Professionalism

When seeking a torque wrench calibration company, look for one that provides calibration according to ISO 17025 standards.

When you work with an ISO 17025-accredited lab, you know you’ve chosen a company who:

  • Employs a formal, written quality program for its processes and procedure
  • Provides formal ISO process training
  • Has its lab suited by a third-party accreditation body like A2LA
  • Monitors and maintains environmental factors

How often should my torque gun be re-calibrated?

The answer to that question all depends on the torque gun and how you are using it. As we said earlier, torque wrench calibration is essential because it ensures that your tools give accruable, reliable measurements.

Some professionals recommend calibration after a tool reaches 2,500 repetition, based on the idea that the performance of the tool is affected between the 2,500 and 3,000 repetition mark.

A few things to consider when it comes to torque wrench calibration:

  • While many industry professionals don’t schedule their calibrations by the calendar, it won’t hurt to get a torque gun calibrated every six months.
  • When you begin seeing more errors than the accepted limit, it’s time to consider having your torque tool calibrated. In addition, you should consider calibration if the wrench meets or exceeds 25 percent of the maximum overhead limit.
  • When in doubt, follow this rule for torque wrench calibration: the more usage the tool gets, the more calibration it will need.
