Q:
Why is it important to properly torque a bolt?
A:
Improper torqueing will stretch the bolt- maybe not enough that it snaps or fails, but it will slightly weaken the bolt which will likely lead to failure down the road. Typically people over tighten bolts and/or lug nuts.
Q:
If I torque a bolt properly to a specified given value, how much torque is required to break the bolt loose?
A:
You will need 1-1/2 times the amount of torque to break the bolt loose. Heat, vibration, dirt and other variables overtime will cause the bolt to tighten up slightly.
